Banish the word 'institution' from your vocabulary. While you're at it, toss the term 'nursing home' on the rubbish heap as well. Not only are the names old hat, so too are the ideas they represent. At Leisureworld Caregiving Centres, we are dedicated to reinventing the notion of long-term care. In our view, facilities for seniors have to feel like loving homes as opposed to sterile hospitals. (On that score, wouldn't it be nice if we also stopped referring to their accommodation as beds?) . They must expand the definition of care well beyond the idea of simply ministering to people's physical health. At the same time, they must see to it that the models of care revolve around the needs of the elderly. Not the other way round. That's why, in communities dotted across the province, Leisureworld is creating places for the elderly to live, not languish. Where people can dwell with independence, dignity, hope and happiness. And where the privacy of each person is respected.

Our facilities are anything but islands of isolation. The doors have been thrown open so that our residents stay connected with the larger world. Community involvement is important to us, particularly as we're welcomed into more communities all the time What's more, because of our hotel affiliation, we have adopted a refreshing orientation to service that is completely unique in this field. When all is said and done, our vision is essentially a simple one. It puts our elderly smack dab in the middle of a connected, caring community of friends, family, services and care providers. It celebrates life and enriches lives by providing meaning and a sense of belonging. After all, it's not the years in your life that matter. It's the life in your years.
